Traveling has the potential to be cheaper than you might think. Sometimes, I’ll ask others how much they think I paid for a ticket to anywhere. The responses are always 3x times the amount I actual paid including taxes and fees. Over the past 20 years, I learned 3 important secrets to score cheap tickets.
Without explanation, the month of January is consistently the best month to purchase tickets for the rest of the year. Let’s assume this month doesn’t work for you to purchase tickets, its ok. You can still find a cheap flight if you book 4-6 months in advance. Generally speaking, this is the best advice. Sometimes, at last minute deals presents itself. For example, one year Delta opened a brand new flight route from Boston to London. They offered a last minute roundtrip ticket at half the price. I purchased 4 tickets at half price and had to be ready to leave within 2 weeks. I use many tools to find cheap tickets and last minute flight deals. Sky Scanner is one of my favorites.
Keep an open mind! In order to find cheap tickets consider traveling to many different destinations. I’m interested in the cheapest tickets anywhere in the world. Sky Scanner makes it easy for me to search for the cheap tickets and inspires me to visit new places. You simply add the departing airport then choose EVERYWHERE. The Skyscanner tool will do the rest of the work. The tool identifies the cheapest flights, then I’ll check dates and times. I find this the most fun and exciting way to choose new destinations while scoring the cheapest prices.
Flexibility. If you can be flexible with your travel dates; you’ll find the most success using any travel resource. I experiment with different dates and times. For example: I’ll choose a Tuesday departure and Saturday return. Then compare the price with a Monday return. Often, the price will drop or increase depending on the search. Be patient and continue to experiment until you find the cheapest possible flight. The second most important advice is being flexible with the departing airport. I bounce between Boston and New York from home base. The closest airport is Boston, however, to get the cheapest possible ticket I was willing to drive and leave from JFK. My latest success story is a roundtrip ticket from New York to Costa Rica for $229.00 R/T all fees and taxes included!
